Another singular, as well as absolutely perfect, wine from this remarkable family team, the 2022 Syrah Life And Death is 100% Syrah from Bien Nacido and Stolpman vineyards, aged 21 months in 61% new oak. It has a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a classic Bien Nacido nose of blackberries, pepper, iodine, and iron notes, with perfectly integrated background spicy oak. Deep, pure, elegant, and beautifully balanced on the palate, it has full-bodied richness, integrated acidity, and a seamless profile. This is stunning stuff that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and can be enjoyed over the following two decades. Drink 2027-2047.

The Wine Independent

Made from 100% Syrah, the 2022 Life and Death Syrah comes from Stolpman Vineyard and Bien Nacido. It was made using 18% whole clusters and was matured for 21 months in French oak barriques, 61% new. Notes of blackberry jelly, violets, kirsch, and underbrush jump from the glass, followed by hints of black pepper and licorice. The full-bodied palate has firm, rounded tannins with great freshness, finishing long and floral. This is the first time this label is 100% Syrah.

The 2022 Syrah Life and Death marks the first 100% Syrah Julia and Nikolas Krankl have made under Fingers Crossed, and it's a beauty. Inky and opaque in the glass, the 2022 is plush, enveloping and seamless, with all edges polished and finely honed. Lavender, sage, orange peel and ripe blackberry saturate the palate, while slaty mineral undertones and ultra-refined tannins carry the finish. The fruit is sourced from Bien Nacido and Stolpman—two of the finest Syrah vineyards in Santa Barbara County, if not California. Density and concentration abound, yet there's unmistakable grace and drive here. (AG)

Notes

I couldn't be more thrilled to offer Nik and Julia Krankl’s Fingers Crossed wines at K&L, direct from their cellars. I’ve known Nik and Julia since my days in Boston, where they owned a coffee shop, of all things. Their ability to perfect their craft (Nik was one of the nation’s top baristas for several years) has always defined them. After Nik spent a few years training at Sine Qua Non, they poured everything into their own project, originally named Faethm and now Fingers Crossed, starting with the 2017 vintage. The artistic bottles and limited mailing list offerings evoke a bit of that Sine Qua Non spirit, and the wines share that SQN-like combination of luxurious texture and remarkable, weightless concentration. Yet, they show a touch more restraint and classical character: deeply flavored but elegant. There’s always so much in reserve, yet I’ve never had a bottle that doesn’t show beautifully right out of the gate. I also can’t recommend their white wines enough, it’s been well publicized, but they are clearly making some of the best whites from the Central Coast and beyond. They may share a name with Manfred, but what Nik and Julia are doing here is uniquely their own-something truly special, born of their dedication to the craft and nothing else. And at our current pricing, you’re getting an inside track on one of California’s great cult producers. -Ryan Moses, K&L
