Reviewed July 2024The 2021 Uno (Sangiovese) is a gorgeous, super-classic red from Sean O'Callaghan. Readers will have to be patient with the 2021, as it is a driving, structured wine, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. The Uno is a fine example of a style and approach very much inspired by the wines of Burgundy. (AG)

The 2021 Uno (closed with a white wax capsule) shows a medium-dark garnet appearance with pretty color saturation. This is 100% Sangiovese with fruit sourced from the village of Radda. There is a slightly wild side to the bouquet with fresh iris, pressed rose and cassis. Uno does a great job of bringing out both the delicate fruit tones and the floral side of the grape. A really beautiful and delicious red with fresh red berries, citrus peel, peppery notes and hints of crushed stones. Minerally and crisp on the palate, with a medium body and dusty, well-integrated tannins. Very balanced and consistent. Delicate on the palate with a lot of freshness and vibrancy. Drink or hold.

Here we have the same type of maceration and organic practices, but UNO represents the best fruit of the estate. The wine in this case is aged in Austrian oak. This is a "Le Pergole Torte" style of wine to me, at a fraction of the price. It’s a truly unique Sangiovese that shows power while maintaining a beautiful elegance that really make you want to come back to the glass. The wine here is plumier than the chianti, with notes of tobacco and black tea. Beautiful earthy spice and minerality balance the powerful fruit. Its structured, deep and really expressive. Radda textbook.
