One of the top value Aussie whites going – year in, year out. It is unwooded and so the purity of varietal expression is keen, with the prettiest of spring florals on display and a brightness of citrus that sparks the palate. Honeysuckle, citrus blossom and acacia work with citrus, quince, green apple and a lemon sorbet tang to ignite the tastebuds, hand in hand with juicy acidity. A mid-palate creaminess opens up the food-matching possibilities. I'm thinking lobster meunière. As for ageing? It's up for a decade or more. (JP)

Really fresh nose, with big tropical hit off the top note, before descending down into fleshy apricots and peaches accompanied with a hit of lemon. The palate is weighty with just a little bit of pith, and a lot of white peach with candied lemon, despite being completely dry. This is your cheap and cheerful bottle when you want a bottle of white wine but you just can't quite decide what. This will pair with most things, but really only needs a glass and some sunshine to get the job done right. Not something to be contemplated, but instead something to be consumed, enjoyed, and then excitedly picked up later with remembrances of the fun day you had while you drank it.

Notes

Established in 1860, Tahbilk is one of Australia's most iconic and historic family-owned wineries. Located in the Nagambie Lakes sub-region of the Goulburn Valley in central Victoria (about 75 miles north of Melbourne), Tahbilk is a winery that “should be visited at least once by every wine-conscious Australian,” as Jeni Port of the Halliday Wine Companion recently wrote. Most well-known for their seriously old vines — Marsanne planted in 1927 and pre-phylloxera Shiraz planted in 1860 — Tahbilk also presents serious value, offering incredibly well-made wines for very reasonable prices. A true piece of Australian wine history, the wines of Tahbilk should be on every wine collector’s radar.
