While Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are stamped on the label, percentages unknown even if the latter adds lots of its positive attributes to the wine. A dark red/inky hue laden with mulberries, plums, cassis and a baker’s cupboard full of spices with wafts of tobacco, menthol/eucalyptus. Full bodied and densely packed with flavour and no shortage of structure or tannins. If you imagine being at a rave, this wine is the DJ mixing it right up. (JF)

Notes of dark cherries and blackberries with hints of cocoa, licorice and bark. Medium-bodied with firm, chalky tannins and a spiced, red and dark fruit character. Structured and a little chewy at the end.

Comprised of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the 2020 Evans & Tate Redbrook Estate is a fantastic example of a juicy yet firmly structed Bordeaux blend from the Margaret River area of Western Australia. Subtle classy French oak notes lend a spicy undertone, and a distinctive green herbal note (mint, tarragon) streaks through the core of the wine. Bottled under screwcap, this is such a fresh and ready-to-drink style of wine that would be the perfect pairing for a casual weeknight dinner. Both this wine and its sibling, the Redbrook Estate Chardonnay, perfectly showcase the Mediterranean climate of this corner of the world and the refined winemaking style of the estate that balances ample ripe fruit with great structure and acidity. These wines are firmly New World, yet made with a distinct nod towards the Old, both deftly avoiding becoming overripe or cloying on the palate.

Notes

The history of Evans & Tate dates back to 1971, when John Evans and John Tate first planted vines in Western Australia’s Swan Valley. Three years later, they acquired land in Wilyabrup, in the heart of the Margaret River region, where they established the Redbrook vineyard. In 1987, the first Evans & Tate Margaret River wine was released. Located just a three-hour drive south of Perth, Margaret River is one of Australia’s—and the world’s—most remote and renowned winegrowing regions. Nestled beside the Indian Ocean, the region offers ideal conditions for viticulture. Its proximity to the ocean, ancient soils, and Mediterranean climate contribute to the consistent quality of its wines. Warm, dry summers are tempered by afternoon sea breezes, while mild winters provide a stable environment for vine growth. Wilyabrup, in particular, is acclaimed for producing some of Australia’s finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The Redbrook vineyard is a prime example, spanning 20 hectares and home to some of the oldest vines in the region, now over 40 years old.
