Michel Arnould "Gènese" Verzenay Grand Cru Brut Rosé Champagne

Michel Arnould "Gènese" Verzenay Grand Cru Brut Rosé Champagne

Review Date: 09/2025

The lees-y notes in the wine when coupled with the pretty red fruit give it a little bit of a pithy grapefruit on the nose, really intriguing, and then with that there's some white flowers and underripe strawberry. The palate is just pure and pretty with little notes of sourdough, but some pretty red fruit, a little bit of it crunchy like cranberry and some underripe raspberry as well, with a really great line of acidity through the whole thing. This is kind of a mid-point in rose, neither incredibly crisp or incredibly rich, but a nice middle ground for people who want a rose with a little bit more to it, but not so much that the lees underneath gets lost. Just a really beautiful sip for under 40 bucks.

Notes

This rosé bottling is 100% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Verzenay, the northernmost of all the Grand Crus, in this northernmost of French wine regions. The whole village faces north, the wrong way, away from the sun, and yet miraculously ripens Pinot Noir, the most difficult Champagne variety to ripen perfectly. Some say it's because of a meteor that in prehistoric times hit the area that is now the village, creating the faux de Verzenay, a forest where the trees bend and fold in on themselves like a dark wood in The Lord of the Rings. The wine is made by assembling multiple vintages and red Coteaux Champenoises sourced from old vines. This lovely Rosé Champagne offers hints of raspberry, strawberry, and red currant. It is refined on the palate where the berry notes unfurl into subtle notes of grenadine.- Gary Westby, K&L Champagne Buyer
