Alway a winner and consistently over-delivering the 2023 Allram Alte Reben Gruner Veltliner is a wonderful introduction to the Allram style and provides amazing value. Classic Gruner aromas of orchard fruits and flint rise from the glass while the palate has that incredibly pleasing phenolic feel with copious amounts of fruit, spice and hints of crushed stone. A great wine that once again punches way above its weight.

The nose is really ripe, but also subtle and I'm finding myself digging for notes, but that's not a bad thing. The best luxury items are defined by nuance, and wine is my favorite luxury item. I get a little touch of something tropical, and a riper kind of peach note along with a little bit of a rounder note towards the end. The palate has soft fruit on the front but a more savory mid-note and a line of very reasonable acidity the whole way through the palate, it's really a tasty bottle and at a very reasonable price. This is going to excel as a food with, the more savory mid-notes really help harmonizing with the savoriness of the food you're eating it with. Roast chicken would be so great with this, but also let's maybe do a vegetable stir fry or juts a nice salad.

Notes

In the post-war era, Walter Allram transformed a small farm in northwest Austria from a couple of fields and vineyards into a winery of about 12 hectares. He distributed his own wines and made a name for himself. In the 1980s, Walter passed the winery down to his daughter Michaela and her husband Erich, and in 2015, their son Lorenz Haas-Allram took over. By the way, Walter Allram, now 90 years old, is still in the vineyard every day… and he claims to know each vine personally.
