2014 Bunnahabhain (Peated) 9 Year Old "Faultline" K&L Exclusive Single Sherry Butt Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

Review Date: 02/2025

Every peat lover should buy this before it runs out- that is the simple truth of the matter. To elaborate, high quality peated malt boasts something of a premium these days, and the closest thing to this deal, Laphroaig 10 y.o. Cask Strength, costs $20 more for a polarizing malt with less character. Hearty, mossy smoke upfront gives way to lacquered wood, cracked pepper, walnuts and charred fig. The malty backbone soaks up the sherry perfectly, providing ample weight and a satisfying finish, balanced by fresh wood smoke and sea salt. I cannot overstate the quality of this cask; previous Staoshia bottlings have used re-charred barrels to impart flavor in a short period, but the refill sherry provides a perfect compliment to the powerful malt with no need for shaving and processing the wood. If you don't procure yours soon, I can guarantee you'll regret missing out.

Notes

Faultline draws a line in the sand. The reference is meant to invoke the tectonic shift that any Faultline bottling brings to the table. Each seeks to provide an experience so far beyond its price point and create so much value that it should send shockwaves through the market. We strive with each Faultline bottling to put incredible unique products into the bottle and charge an unbelievable price. This set of six casks was selected by the K&L Spirits team and bottled in summer of 2024. Each label of this edition of Faultline showcases the work of young contemporary artists Céu Isatto from Brazil's southernmost region. Each bottling features its own fraction of the polyptych painting, highlighting the abstract qualities and modular possibilities of this otherwise figurative work. This impeccable Bunnahabhain distillery is famous for being the gentle Islay dram. Renowned for being one of the only "unpeated" Islay malts, true diehard peat lovers know that when those big fat Bunnah pots get hold of a heavily peated malt, they can produce some of Islay's most powerful and complex whisky. Unusually referred to by the trade name Staoisha, the distillery calls their peated version Toiteach. In this case our bottler simply calls it Bunnahabhain Peated. And that it is. Filled into a sherry butt on October 30th, 2014, it was bottled on July 26th of 2024 at a cask strength of 54.7%. It was bottled without chillfiltration or color additions of any kind.
