2014 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Grandes Ruchottes"

Allen Meadows of Burghound reports: "Pierre-Yves Colin described the 2014 vintage as "one where the hail didn't really affect us all that much except in Meursault where outside of the Charmes it was a seriously limiting factor in terms of volume. Otherwise we had reasonably but not high yields everywhere else that ranged basically from 45 to 50 hl/ha for the 1ers. We chose to begin picking on the 10th of September under ideal conditions and brought in clean and ripe fruit that had reasonably potential alcohols and acid levels. I felt like the wines were going to be sufficiently rich that they didn't need any lees stirring so we did none at all. I also cut back somewhat on the use of new wood to no more than 30% and even then with more 350 liter barrels that effectively reduces the actual percentage even more. As to the wines they're completely classic in terms of freshness and transparency to the underlying terroir and my sense at this early stage is that they should reward mid-term keeping." Colin noted that most wines were either bottled, or will be bottled, without fining or filtration. Colin further noted that he added a few parcels and now owns and farms 7.5 ha directly and buys in the equivalent of another 4 ha where he is responsible for the harvest. He also observed that he is continuing to cap each bottle with wax as an aid in fighting potential premature oxidation issues. Those 2014s that are in bottle were put there in December 2015."
