A fine bright purple. The nose is solid and concentrated, in a forward style of raspberry fruit. There is a wealth of fruit on the palate though not as seductive as Clos St-Denis can be, but all in balance and with an agreeably long finish. A really sensible, poised, approach to winemaking. 80% whole bunch vinification hardly shows, while 50% new oak feels about right.

Vinous

The 2022 Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru is aged half in new oak with 70% to 80% whole bunches. The well-defined bouquet offers wonderful mineral-laden red berry fruit, with a hint of savoriness/meat juices in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very harmonious and smooth. It gently builds in the mouth toward a lightly spiced finish. Very fine. (NM)

Note: from a .28 ha parcel of 30+ year old vines in Calouère; the first vintage was 1979. Beautifully spicy aromas of red and dark cherry, crushed fennel, violet and rose petal are trimmed in very generous wood. The delicious and attractively textured flavors are not especially dense but the supporting tannins are sophisticated and refined on the moderately austere, long and surprisingly powerful finale. This is also going to need extended keeping.

Notes

Bill Nanson for Burgundy Report: "They can get 4 barrels from these 45-year-old vines. 80% whole bunch here and it’s the wine that gets the most new oak – 50% More of a cushion and so depth to this apparently textured nose. So beautiful and elegant but the fruit is completely pure and linear. That’s simply a superb, sublime, wine – wonderful CSD – faintly saline in this finish too – probably from the, otherwise hardly visible, oak." (01/2025)
