80% whole bunch vinification. Medium deep crimson ruby. The bouquet is attractive but without too much detail yet. There is a dense concentration of a fresh red berry fruit, plenty in mid palate then a slightly gentler finish. Overall, though, Les Millandes is coherent and in the style of the vintage. Not one of the wilder Moreys but well put together. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Nov 2023.

The 2022 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 1er Cru includes 60% whole bunches this year. It offers blackberry and raspberry fruit, white pepper and light peppermint aromas on the nose that gradually cohere in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, good depth and vitality. The tang of Japanese nori is quite strong towards the long lingering finish. It needs a little more precision overall, but it's still a well-crafted Morey-Saint-Denis.(NM)

Here the wood treatment is much more subtle on the aromas of both red and dark currant that also display a broad range of floral nuances. I very much like the mouthfeel of the caressing but punchy large-scaled flavors that exhibit impressive power on the equally robust and serious finale that is even firmer. Fine quality here in a decidedly built-to-age package.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Open and fragrant with invitingly pure dark-red fruit and the hallmark impression of something lightly floral, and a touch of spice. Complex, even in youth. Firm, dry, smooth tannins. Elegantly structured. (JH)

While there's something glorious about trying a beautiful and expensive bottle of Burgundy, sometimes there's a little bit of sadness when your brain starts to imagine how much better the wine could be with some time, and this one did that little trick to me. This is really great now, it has structure and already is showing great depth and length both. At the same time, the level of acidity, the little firmer grip on the tannins, and the overall fruit quality tells me that I want to have this in another 5-10 years to properly and really enjoy it. Give this a heavy decant and have with some perfectly rich foods and this will be everything you want it to be, but with a little patience this will be more than you thought it could be.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Over 70-year-old vines. ‘We made a ‘light’ green harvest here in 2022…’ A little more aromatic volume and energy – more iron & perfume too. Super scale again – the fruit is sweet but the energy balance is first-class – and the finishing depth is first class too. Love it !!"(01/2025)
