The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champonnet 1er Cru, which suffered minor hail damage in July, includes 60% whole bunches and matured in 20% new oak. It has a slightly reductive bouquet that just misses the finesse of the Les Goulots. The palate is better, with blood orange-infused red fruit and gentle grip, growing spicy towards the finish with quite a long fig-tinged aftertaste. Excellent.(NM)

Moderate wood influence suffuses the earthier aromas of poached plum and a plethora of attractive floral elements. The solidly concentrated and quite seductively textured medium-bodied flavors possess evident power on the sappy, dusty and robust finale where a touch of warmth slowly emerges. As is almost always true for Champonnets, this is very much built-to-age and a wine that's going to need at least some patience.
