Alain Coudert’s 2023 Fleurie “Clos de la Roilette” is a lovely young wine, showing fineripeness on both the nose and palate and an octane level in this vintage of fourteen percent. Thewine’s aromatic constellation is fresh and vibrant, hopping from the glass in a mix of red and blackcherries, pomegranate, a fine base of dark soil, a touch of sweet stem tones, woodsmoke and apungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nicely transparent to thesoil and generously endowed at the core with ripe fruit. The wine has fine depth of fruit, somechewy tannins, tangy acids and shows a touch of concentrating effects to its constituentcomponents from the drought, but will be a fine bottle with a bit of bottle age. Usually this wineis an utter charmer from the moment it is released, but the 2023 version seems likely to want ayear or two in the cellar before it will start to drink with its customary generosity. 2027-2050.

A prototypical Fleurie with a wealth of red cherry, red berry and ripe strawberry aromas, plus a savory element that is deftly interwoven with this. Gentle, velvety tannins give the medium-bodied palate well-defined contours and a certain gracefulness. Mineral acidity keeps the finish bright and straight. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Fleurie opens on the nose with notes of peonies, licorice, sous-bois and dark black fruits. Full-bodied and with ripe acidity, the wine has considerable weight, opening with broad shoulders, though centered by its sandpaper tannins that bring the wine back into a focused trajectory. As the wine develops, layers of soy and graphite emerge, highlighting its unique manganese terroir and adding savory complexity to the robust, structured profile. (KW) 91+

A pretty mid purple. There is not much nose at all at this stage. Good tension on the palate, but borderline soupy, showing the conjunction of the very sunny vintage and the vineyard’s lower slope location Alcohol 14.00%. Drink from 2025-2027. Tasted Apr 2025.

I always love this wine and the 2023 vintage is once again a great wine in the making. Classic aromas of crushed geraniums, pulverized volcanic rock and spicey dark fruit give way to a palate of red and black raspberry with wonderful complexity, excellent depth and grippy tannins. This is a serious Fleurie that deftly combines floral notes with dark fruits. It there is a quintessential Fleurie this is it!

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "A rounder, deeper nose, rounder, slightly creamy but the elevage was only in the old foudres of the domaine. Supple – more silky – though there’s a tiny grain of tannin if you go looking for it – silky, long, more complex finishing – that’s really a super wine – love it – simply excellent."(02/2025) 100% Gamay. From 50-year-old vines on heavy clay soils with relatively little granite and quite a lot of the iron-like mineral manganese....
