A Trail of Smoke is a rare and dignified 42-year-old blended malt Scotch whisky that masterfully captures the fading echoes of island peat. Part of House of Hazelwood’s Legacy Collection, this limited release is a study in subtlety—where smoke is present, but never dominant, allowing decades of slow maturation to express themselves with precision and poise. The nose opens with delicate sweetness—impressions of ripe tropical fruit, soft toffee, and dried herbs—before evolving into gentle woodsmoke and maritime breeze. On the palate, layers of charred pineapple, stewed pear, and distant bonfire intertwine with aged oak and waxy depth. The smoke is ever-present, yet restrained, enhancing the structure without overpowering the fruit or malt. Matured exclusively in American oak and bottled at natural cask strength (46.5% ABV), this expression is non-chill filtered and free of artificial coloring. The finish is graceful and enduring, marked by dry smoke, saline minerality, and a whisper of spice that lingers on the edges of the palate. Only 385 bottles were produced, each presented in an elegant decanter and collector’s box.
