Containing 40% whole bunches, the 2022 Volnay Vieilles Vignes has a splendid bouquet with ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit, a touch of Provençal herbs lending complexity. The whole bunches are very beneficial here. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, rounded in texture, and quite harmonious with pure raspberry and wild strawberry notes on the finish. Give this Volnay 12 to 18 months in bottle. Frédéric Rossignol greeted me in his barrel cellar on a quiet Saturday afternoon. “There was little stress in the vines, and I’d never seen such high quality of fruit. We started the harvest on August 28 and picked over seven days, starting with the reds and picking according to the vineyard. Everything is picked by hand, even the Passetoutgrain [which I did not taste on this occasion]. Actually, 2023 was more complicated than 2022. That picking started in mid-September, but you’ll taste those next year. The reds will be bottled at the beginning of December.” Not a bad line-up here. I have one or two questions about what I feel was excessive use of stems in the entry-level cuvées. They tended to obscure the terroir, and I’m not completely bought on raising an entire cuvée entirely in glass WineGlobes, which render wines a bit “skinny,” almost “sterile.” But hey, as I said to Rossignol, if you don’t try, you don’t know.(NM)

Ripe yet still reasonably fresh aromas include those of both red and dark pinot fruit, discreet spice and earth nuances plus a hint of violet character. The delicious if not especially dense middle weight flavors possess acceptable verve while the moderately structured finish displays good length if noticeable warmth. While this could easily be enjoyed now with some air, I would be inclined to allow it 4 to 6 years of keeping first.

The 2022 Domaine Rossignol-Fevrier Volnay Vieilles Vignes presents a complex array of flavors that blend seamlessly, one sensation flowing into the next: raspberry, Bing cherry, lavender, baking spices, and a wee pinch of finely ground Tellicherry pepper. An Old-World sanguine note lingers on a pleasing, cherry-inflected finish. With an average vine age of 40 years, fourth-generation father-and-son winemakers Frédéric and Valentin Rossignol have farmed biodynamically since 2009. After full conversion, they achieved Demeter certification in 2012.

Notes

This 7 ha domaine is among the oldest in Burgundy as it was founded in 1774. In contrast to most of Burgundy at the first part of the 20th C, it was also among the first to begin selling domaine bottled wines, which occurred as early as 1922. Frédéric Rossignol took the reins in 1993 and in 2005, instituted biodynamic farming, finally converting the entire domaine in 2012. The fruit is harvested manually and the wines are fermented with varying amounts of whole clusters before racking off to barrel. The wood regimen is light on new wood at no more than 15% during an élevage which lasts 15 to 18 months for the 1ers before bottling unfiltered.
