2019 Vodopivec "Solo MM19" Vitovska
95
Vinous
The 2019 Solo MM19 opens slowly in the glass, smokey and youthfully backward. Swirling reveals dried peach and nectarine layers complemented by honeyed florals and wet stone. It is silky in texture, like liquid stone, and vertical in feel, with a core of ripe orchard fruits contrasted by salty minerals and brisk acidity. Inner florals resonate throughout the finish, along with a gingery spice hint, as this finishes structured and refined. This sleeping beauty has a long future ahead of it.

Notes
Paolo Vodopivec, his winery and six hectares of densely planted Vitovska are located in Carso, a plateau of shear limestone tucked between the border of Slovenia and the Adriatic Sea. There's something about Vodopivec's voice, tone and demeanor, that makes you listen. Serious yet passionate, introspective yet authoritative, much like the wines he produces. Like many producers here, the wines can be described as "skin contact" in style, yet the purity achieved in this monastic winery is like nowhere else. Vodopivec was inspired by Josko Gravner. Like him, Vodopivec ages most of his wines in subterranean Georgian Amphora, followed by refinement in large neutral oak and a long stay in bottle before release. The results must be tasted to be believed. These are some of the top white wines being made in the world today, like cool-mountain air and liquid stone encapsulated in a bottle, yet with rich textural complexities that boggle the mind. The 2019s may be some of his best wines yet, a complex and age-worthy vintage that spent an extra six months in barrel due to the worldwide shortages of glass bottles. While most consumers will automatically gravitate toward the single-vineyard Solo MM19 ( made from a 1.3-hectare parcel on pure limestone) I beseech readers to search them all out.
