2019 Mestres "Coquet" Gran Reserva Brut Nature Cava

Wine Advocate
Review Date: 05/2024The youngest and most approachable of the sparkling wines from Mestres, the 2019 Coquet Gran Reserva Brut Nature mixes grapes from their own vineyards with purchased ones but is produced with the same care as the rest of the range—fermented and kept in stainless steel, but with a shorter aging with the lees in bottle, 42 months in this case, also closed with natural cork. It still has a mixture of fruit and flowers with spice and yeast notes and a lively palate with abundant bubbles, fresh and with nice balance, finishing dry. Quite remarkable for the price. 76,880 numbered bottles produced. All the bottles carry the disgorgement date on the back label. The bottle I tasted was disgorged in November 2023. (LG)

To some Mestres is considered the Lopez de Heredia of Cava. The family has records of them growing grapes and selling wines from as far back as 1312. They made their first sparkling wine in 1925. They were the first producers to produce non dosage wines, and they were the family that first registered the word "Cava" in 1959. They only used the native grapes to the region Xarel lo, Parellada, and Macabeu. They do not use herbicides nor pesticides. The fruit is always hand harvested. Visol was the very first Cava sold without dosage back in 1945!
