This solid, dependable wine is a consistent value from Bouley, assembled from over two hectares of vines and thirteen different parcels (the Pluchots is bottled apart). The ripe blackberry and plum fruit is forward and expressive, with a nuanced expression of earth and smoke. The texture is concentrated and surprisingly dense for a village-level wine. There is abundant fruit and few hard edges here – the wine will be ready to drink relatively quickly after release, yet it also has the substance to age.(CC)

Two tanks have been blended in the sample. A rich glowing purple. Heady ripe fruit but very far from cooked. There is fractionally higher volatile, but within bounds, a nutty note, the fruit is distinctly ripe, lower acidity. I would have preferred earlier picking. Drink from 2026-2031. Tasted Oct 2023.

Note: from Ez Echards, Les Pluchots, Les Pasquiers and Les Grands Champs. Moderate reduction. I like the punch and freshness to the suave and palate soaking medium-bodied flavors that display a subtle minerality on the youthfully austere finale. This balanced effort should mature relatively quickly and could also be enjoyed young.

The 2022 Volnay Village is well-defined on the nose: black cherries commingling with pressed violet and incense. I appreciate the purity of fruit here. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy red fruit, spicier than the previous vintage with a ripe, slightly confit finish. Again, just a touch of warmth marks this Volnay; as such, it is best broached in its first 6-8 years. (NM)

This is just an absolutely phenomenal bottle of wine, I don't care who you are, this is just straight up good. The nose is this really amazing mélange of fruit and spice, there's a lot of really pretty red fruit, a little bit of stewed strawberry, but fresh raspberry, pie cherry, and then a little bit of cranberry-pomegranate-rosehip compote towards the end, all with just little touches of barrel spice throughout. The palate is fairly dense, albeit still solidly towards the light side of things, there's super pretty raspberry, red cherry, and cranberry skin on the palate. This is just so good and I really had a tough time spitting this one out, both during the tasting and even more so now a few hours later once it's had a really nice time to open up. Have this with anything you want, because if you're drinking this you already should know what you're pairing it with, but if you're just winging it all the usual suspects would be great. Roast chicken could be great, salmon, some pork dishes. Just go for it.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Usually about 10 different parcels assembled, 2 of which on the hillside. A nose of darker depth. More open and melting in style after the Monthelie. Lots of concentration – but not weight – to be seen here. Small finishing bitters round out an interesting, clean, wine with plenty of complexity. Delicious."(03/2024)
