The region of Coteaux du Layon doesn’t get nearly the attention it deserves. This sub-appellation of Anjou is home wine ranging from off-dry to sweet that are perfect with spicy dishes, salty foods, or a maybe for the sweeter styles—plate of cheese after dinner. The “Perrières” bottling from Clocher leans more toward the off-dry side (maybe just a touch sweeter), but it would shine in either setting. If you love a good Spätlese or Auslese from Germany, the explosive peach and nectarine stone fruit flavors here will feel right at home. And if sweeter wines aren’t your usual pick, try it with some bold, aged cheeses—it’s a fantastic way to wind down the evening. Either way, if you haven’t explored this region yet, it’s time. This Coteaux du Layon is absolutely tremendous.
