This wine wears delicious earthiness on its sleeve. It opens with a reserved, yet savory nose of forest floor, black raspberry, dried mushroom and black olive. A mix of dried hay, black plum and chalk dust parallel persistent, velvety tannins. (RS)

Still one of my favorite under-the-radar value producers, the Petite Clocher wines from Anjou are finally back in stock after far too long a hiatus. This small family-run domaine, nestled in the heart of Anjou, works with schist-based soils that yield wonderfully drinkable, expressive Chenin Blanc. Their everyday Anjou Blanc charms with aromas of Honeycrisp apple, roasted pear, and white flowers, layered with warm spice notes of allspice and cinnamon. Beautifully crafted and consistently delicious, these wines deliver some of the highest QPR on our shelves.

Notes

Established over 50 years ago, the 4th generation of the Denis family now runs this operation. Julien is the winemaker, Stephane in charge of the viticulture and Vincent oversees the administration and sales. Over the last few decades the property has grown from 5 to 80 hectares that stretch across the appellation including some very select parcels in the Coteaux du Layon (home of one of the region's great dessert wines). The Anjou Rouge is 100% Cabernet Franc grown on schist soils. The wine is aged in tank preserving its fruit and regional character. This is a great introduction to Anjou and makes the perfect weeknight wine.
