An impressive wine, broad, textural and layered, with such brightness at the center. Dark cherries, blueberries, violets, grilled meat, dried herbs, ashes and warm spices on the nose. It’s full-bodied with finely grained tannins. There is a brightness at the center, with crunchy blue fruit and violets mingling with the spices under the watch of a solid frame of finely grained tannins. Structured and harmonious on the broad, dense, textural and focused palate. Such intensity and drive, always in control and with a very refined texture. So much depth and layers funneling trough a vibrant, spicy, flavorful and very long finish. From organically grown grapes.

The 2022 Hermitage from Yann Chave has turned out beautifully, wafting from the glass with aromas of spices, licorice, dark wild berries, mulberries and blueberries. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, ample and seamless, it's suave and enveloping with a multidimensional core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, mineral, racy and slightly chocolate-inflected finish. Matured in new large barrels from Taransaud, it's a blend of two terroirs: Beaumes, with its loess soils, and Péléat, known for being one of the warmest, sunniest spots on the hill of Hermitage. The 2022 Hermitage will be terrific, if not up with the finest from this estate. Darker currants, roasted meats, leather, and peppery spice notes all define the aromatics, and it's a big, broad-shouldered Hermitage with terrific mid-palate density, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. 93-95+

Hermitage has become more synonymous with bold Syrah but the Yann Chave is pure class and elegance. This is a perfumed wine with a deep core of fruit but so well balanced the notes of fig, currants and blackberry are framed by lavender and bay leaf. Really long finish here. Definitely one of the stars of my recent visit, showing up there with other top 2022 releases. This is out-of-the-glass compelling but that tannins say, give me just a few more years. Either way, this not to be missed!

Notes

Domaine Yann Chave is a family-run estate located in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, with holdings also on the esteemed Hermitage hillside. Founded in the early 1970s by Nicole and Bernard Chave, the domaine began with a mix of vineyards and fruit orchards. After taking over in 1996, Yann Chave shifted focus exclusively to viticulture, restructuring the vineyards and eventually transitioning the estate to organic farming—an effort sparked by a personal experience with chemical poisoning. Certified organic since 2007, the estate now spans 20 hectares, and Yann’s thoughtful, detail-driven approach—shaped in part by his background in rugby—balances technical precision with deep respect for the land and future generations. The Hermitage Red comes from vines over 50 years old, located in the Beaume and Péléat lieu-dits on the legendary Hermitage hillside. Planted on deep, loess soils and facing south, the vineyards receive optimal sunshine, benefiting from the warm climate. The combination of old massal selection vines and this unique terroir results in a wine with both remarkable substance and finesse.
