An amazing Crozes-Hermitage. Very complex nose with notes of candied bitter oranges, mulberries and hot dry earth. Serious concentration for this appellation, plus a stack of fine tannins that exactly balance the finely nuanced forest berries and citrus fruit. Super-long very polished finish. Drink or hold. (SP)

Lovely balance here, with bold, focused berry and cherry fruits, as well as a touch of blackcurrant richness. Has some pepper and olive character in the background, with some liquid rock character adding savoury interest.

Crafted from old vines (65 years old) in the appellation's southern part, the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Le Rouvre exudes aromas of spices, licorice, dark berries and a lovely touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and supple, it's clean and pure with a fleshy core of fruit, an enrobing palate and a long, spicy and suave finish. Matured in a combination of used large barrels from Taransaud and Seguin Moreau, this wine is a gem worth seeking out, and it's poised to age gracefully over the next decade. (YC) 93+

The smaller production 2022 Crozes-Hermitage Le Rouvre is a selection of older vines from the Les Chassis region of Crozes. Not yet bottled, it has more cassis, violet, pepper, and graphite-driven aromatics and is medium to full-bodied on the palate, with fine tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and the density and depth to benefit from 3-4 years of bottle age and evolve nicely over the following decade. 91-93+

The deeper darker core of fruit on "Le Rouvre" has that resonating palate feel that is reserved for the best and brightest in this category. Sumptuous blackberry, black cherry fruit framed by hints of spice and a touch of thyme. Long finish and great balance. If you favor more upfront fruit, a pleasure to drink now. Want more of those complex Syrah characters, this should reach its peak in 5-7 years. Top tier Crozes!

Notes

Domaine Yann Chave is a family-run estate located in the heart of the Crozes-Hermitage appellation, with holdings also on the esteemed Hermitage hillside. Founded in the early 1970s by Nicole and Bernard Chave, the domaine began with a mix of vineyards and fruit orchards. After taking over in 1996, Yann Chave shifted focus exclusively to viticulture, restructuring the vineyards and eventually transitioning the estate to organic farming—an effort sparked by a personal experience with chemical poisoning. Certified organic since 2007, the estate now spans 20 hectares, and Yann’s thoughtful, detail-driven approach balances technical precision with deep respect for the land and future generations. Le Rouvre is sourced from the “Les Pautus” terraces, where the former Rhône riverbed left behind a thick layer of rolled river pebbles—an iconic feature of the Crozes-Hermitage terroir. The site is home to massal-selection Syrah vines over 60 years old, yielding naturally low quantities of concentrated fruit. Vinification is low-intervention: grapes are destemmed, gently pumped over during a four-week maceration, and fermented at moderate temperatures. Aging takes place in 600L demi-muids for one year, followed by six months in tank before bottling. The resulting wine is structured yet supple, with notes of black fruit, olive, and smoky minerality, finishing fresh and persistent.
