Review Date: 12/2002The 1999 Scrio (100% Syrah aged 18 months in French demi-muids) exhibits classic Syrah characteristics of camphor/creosote intertwined with blackberry liqueur, licorice, and vanilla. With phenomenally high extract as well as tannin, massive body, and a long, pure, concentrated finish, this unfiltered beauty's dry extract numbers are nearly off the charts. Nearly opaque dark ruby. Earth, mineral, spices and musky scents fill the nose. Nicely focused blackberry, graphite, black pepper and spicy oak engage the palate and the big, ripe tannins pave the way to a sweet tobacco finish. (EB)
