Juanjo Tellaetxe Tantaka, a priest by profession, grew up in a remote river valley in the Basque province of Araba. As a child Juanjo would walk with the shepherds as they followed their flocks through the valley. His family has lived in Araba for generations in Araba; the family cemetery shares a river canyon with Juanjo’s vineyards. Steep mountains protect the valley from the harsh Atlantic winds, so the valley is humid and cool most of the year creating long hang times for the grapes. During the rainy season, waterfalls cascade down sheer cliff faces, feeding into an underground reservoir which in turn feeds into the river cutting through the canyon. This is a special place, standing still in time, isolated from the outside world, it truly feels prehistoric. This bottling is 100% Hondarrabi Beltza, it is uncommon to see a red wine from the region, most of the red that is grown is used for the region's famous Rose wines. Stainless steel fermented and aged, this is a unique expression from the region, but that is to be expected from Tanaka. They have been challenging expectations and raising the quality bar for years.
