Aphros is a traditional Quinta in Casal do Paço, in the heart of Lima Valley in far northern Portugal not far from the border with Spain. Once belonging to a family from Lisbon, the Quinta was a rural family retreat through the end of the 20th century, a time during which many locals were leaving the countryside to live in the city. In 2004 Vasco Croft revived the semi-abandoned property, with the vision of a sustainable and ecological project. As a lifelong student of Rudolf Steiner he took inspiration from the principles of biodynamics, reshaping the farm with cover crops, animals, and the accompanying biodynamic preparations. An old cellar in the house was converted to a winemaking facility. Two nearby quintas were added to the property and today the Aphros consists of 20 hectares. The “Ten” bottling of Loureiro is named for the both the target alcohol level and grams of residual sugar. Although this is a still bottling of Vinho Verde, the result is a zesty, light-bodied wine, bursting with fresh citrus notes.
