This wine, unlike several other Mont de Milieus, does not show the super ripe style – which Cyril ascribes to a question of which rootstock is employed and there can be big differences in maturity. His holding is on 41B. This has superb breadth of flavour, depth too, and just the perfect ripeness. Finishes in white fruit with some iodine, very long, impeccably balanced. 15% was aged in barrels. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted Jun 2024.

Dominated by uplifting minerality on the nose, pear slices, nectarines and sweet spice saturate the chunky palate. This sees 20% oak, but save some mid-palate breadth, it was hard to find it in the wine. Elegant, fervently dry and long on the finish, this was ready to be bottled in ten days.

This is a powerhouse of a Chablis with explosive aromas of white flowers, sea shells and hints of lemon peel while the palate unfurls to reveal layer-after-layer of perfectly delineated fruit veering from fresh citrus notes to yellow orchard fruits. Loaded with fruit and zesty acidity the roundness and ample fruit make this a powerful and full-bodied Chablis that truly delivers on its 1er Cru pedigree.

There are 40 main 1er Cru vineyards in Chablis and Mont de Milieu is considered one of the best. Located on the eastern banks of the Serein River, the vineyard borders Chablis's Grand Cru vineyards and has 35 + year old vines planted in limestone. 2023 was hot and dry. In typical Burgundy fashion, viticulturists had to battle spring frosts, rain (mildew!), and drought to make it to the finish line, but the harvest had high yields of lush ripe grapes. The Agnes Gleizes was fermented in stainless steel to preserve the freshness and promote longevity. On the nose and palate, elegant, floral and racy, stone fruit (peaches, apricot), a garden of flowers, lemon-lime, and the opulent richness of a Mont de Milieu.

From a nice trio of direct-import Chablis comes this Mont de Milieu premier cru bottling. This wine is rich and full-bodied with a luscious texture and lovely citrus and stone fruits on the palate. There's also a nice touch a salinity on the finish, begging for some seafood to accompany this bottle. It's worth noting that this is serious wine that can stand up to aging too, if you have the patience, which, sadly, I do not.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Vines of 50-60 years of age. 20% barrel elevage. A perfumed width of aroma – maybe a small wood spice too. Ooh – that’s the most impressive combination of incisive but textural generosity – that’s a great start. The finish is such a long lasting vibration. Great – and it will just keep getting better with time…"(02/2025)
