2019 Luis Cañas "Reserva de la Familia" Reserva Rioja
95
Jeb Dunnuck
Review Date: 07/2024Including 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Tempranillo-dominated 2019 Rioja Reserva Selección de la Familia is a crème de la crème selection that was aged 20 months in oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a sensational nose of ripe black and blue fruits, cedarwood, graphite, smoked tobacco, and chocolate. This carries to a full-bodied Rioja with a powerful, layered mouthfeel, ripe yet building tannins, and serious length on the finish.

Luis Canas is one of the oldest family run wineries in Rioja Alavesa. Located in the heart of the region, all their vineyards are located on the chalky hills North of Ebro River. In the winery they make traditionally styled wines; fermentation in tank with MLF taking place in barrel, a mixture of French and American and various ages depending on the wine. The Seleccion de la Familia is anything but typical. This is a Rioja that has 15% Cabernet Sauvignon! The family was given permission by the appellation to plant an experimental Cabernet vineyard in 1985. The remainder of the wine is Tempranillo from vineyards that are no younger than 50 years. The wine was aged for 20 months in mostly new oak barrels, a 50/50 mix of French and American oak. This is Rioja with a subtle Bordeaux twist. This has all the classic aromatics of Rioja; spice, leather, mixed fruits with a subtle graphite and tobacco note. The palate is full bodied with dynamic fruit and a touch more structure than your typical Reserva. Complex, full, and long this is a one-of-a-kind Rioja.
