2023 Wittmann Niersteiner Riesling Trocken
94
James Suckling
Review Date: 07/2024This dry riesling from the famous commune of Neirstein has a wonderful creaminess, but the most striking thing about it is the herbal and mineral intensity that drives it along. They also give a terrific elegance and excitement (a rare combination). Very long, focused and delicate finish. A cuvee of wines from the Oelberg and Orbel GG sites. From biodynamically grown grapes with Respekt certification. Drink or hold.

Sourced in the crus Orbel and Ölberg, Wittmann's 2023 Niersteiner Riesling 1G is deep, intense and citric as well as flinty/mineral on the nose that is elegant and balanced and remarkably complex. Full-bodied, pure and fresh on the palate, this is an intense and elegant, juicy, balanced and stimulating Riesling with delicate acidity, a saline finish and a long, aromatic aftertaste. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in October 2024.(SR)

The 2023 Riesling Niersteiner was picked in Ölberg and Orbel, on the Permian sandstone of the Red Slope. Tangerine teases right away on the nose, with just a touch of petrichor. The palate is super-slender, beautifully salty, mouthwatering and made in the streamlined Wittmann fashion. It tinkles beautifully with citrus peel spiciness and a stony, saline finish. A vibrant and expressive wine, showing a distinct flinty edge paired with aromatic spice. Candied citrus notes add a touch of sweetness, while the wine's acidity provides great tension and balance. It finishes long, with layers of complexity that linger on the palate, offering both freshness and depth. (AZ)
