The 2022 vintage marks the 50th vintage of the Lytton Springs wine, a confident, expressive year for the estate. Moderate spring weather led to even ripening, although a brief frost event in May caused a slight reduction in yield. However, what remained in the vines turned out to be of excellent quality and beautifully concentrated. Harvest happened just ahead of a September heatwave, a decision that preserved freshness and aromatic lift. In the glass, the 2022 Lytton Springs shows rich, firm tannins and a savoury, salty edge. Flavours of dark cherries, pluots, and ripe brambly berries unfold alongside herbaceous aromas of fennel and a touch of dried citrus peel. Aged in 15% new American oak, the wine has a really nice balance, with acidity supporting its generous fruit and mouthfeel. (ACQ)

The densely packed nose of this legendary old vine field blend of Zin, Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Alicante gives aromas of crushed blackberry, purple flowers and rich earthy spices, while the palate brings black cherry, olive and licorice flavors in a framework of opulent tannin that will age effortlessly for more than a decade. *Cellar Selection* (TC)

This is the kingpin of Ridge’s Sonoma County heritage blends and it doesn’t disappoint. Equal parts fruity, spicy and savory on a full body braced by moderate tannins. Judicious oak spices like cedar and cigar box complement pure, ripe blackberries and raspberries and a dash of black pepper. Known to age well for decades. (JG)

Like a beast that's been tamed, this red is genteel and polished on the outside but dark and fervent deep down, with expressive flavors of blackberry, briar patch, savory anise and pepper. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane and Alicante Bouschet. *Highly Recommended* (TF)

This landmark 50th Anniversary bottling from Ridge shows the quality of this vineyard and their unparalleled experience capturing this special place in a wine. A true field blend of ancient vines mostly planted over 100 years ago. The rolling hills of Lytton are covered in a patchwork of these beautiful, old, head-trained vines. Farmed organically, with the utmost care and attention, Ridge takes their role as custodians of this heritage site very seriously. The 2022 vintage shows just how these old vines know how to handle anything mother nature throws at them. The heat spike before harvest was nothing these vines hadn't dealt with before, and the wine is full of life and vibrancy. Briary, brambly deep red fruits, boysenberry, baking spice, crumbly dry earth, raspberry liqueur, and subtle oak frame the medium to full bodied core. Aromatic, expressive and drinking beautifully upon release, but with proven aging potential to boot. A slice of California history for a remarkably affordable price.

Notes

95 points Marisa Finetti for Decanter: "Committed to both sustainable and organic farming practices, Ridge’s pre-industrial approach lends its sensibility to field blends made from old, time-honored vines. Leading the Sonoma County blend is Zinfandel, California’s quintessential heritage grape, along with Petite Sirah, Carignan and Alicante Bouschet. Hand-harvest, co-fermented, then thoughtfully aged in American oak, the ruby hues with purple reflections follow with a bramble of wild berries, violet, sarsaparilla, fennel, and mint on the nose. An energised mouthfeel of blackberries, cherry cola, dried herbs, and cocoa-covered coffee beans, drive this lush and juicy field blend to a long, lifted finish. (Drink between 2024-2038)" (03/2024)
