The Silver Eagle Vineyard is farmed by the family of the late Ulises Valdez Sr who was a longtime friend of winemaker Sam Kaplan. Just 150 cases were produced of this Pinot, aged 15 months in French oak. Heady aromas of rose, brandied cherries, pine sap and burnt orange peel. The palate is equally layered, unfolding with dark cherry, pomegranate and plums tinged with cinnamon spice, fine-grained tannins and a long earthy finish. For all its weight, it’s never burdensome but stays fresh with a good acid lift. (JC)

The 2019 Pinot Noir Silver Eagle Vineyard is a new label/vineyard-designate wine for Maxem, coming from a site in Sonoma Coast AVA, planted to the "VR" clone (allegedly from Vosne-Romanée). Tasted as a barrel sample, it displays a medium ruby-purple color and a very savory/spicy nose of Sichuan pepper, Indian spices and garrigue with a core of black raspberries, red raspberry compote and fresh blackberries plus a waft of cinnamon stick. Medium-bodied, very elegant and refreshing, it has a fine-grained texture and a long, peppery finish. 150 cases are due to be made. (LPB)

Notes

Praise for the producer from Jeb Dunnuck: "The personal label of the up-and-coming Sam Kaplan, these Maxem releases should be snatched up by readers." (01/2020)
