If sunshine could be bottled it would be this. Aromas of fresh succulent stone fruit, a hint of yeast, citrus blossoms and notes of quince on the nose. The mousse is creamy and light with baked red apples, blood orange zest, white grapefruit, sticky caramel and layered salinity with a mouthwatering finish. It will bring a smile to your lips. *Cellar Selection* (TP)

A young, potent wine, the 2019 Brut L'Ermitage is shaping up to be the greatest wine ever made at Roederer Estate. The aromatics are beguiling, but the 2019 is going to need a number of years to settle down. Readers will have to be patient. The 2019 is seriously impressive, but it needs time. It is the only wine in this series that was vinified with full malolactic fermentation and has the most lots fermented in wood here. It also saw the lowest dosage ever here, at 6 grams per liter. These choices look to be a winning approach for the future. Superb. Disgorged: February 2024. (AG)

The 2019 Brut L'Ermitage blends 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, all estate grown from one growing season, with 3.9% Chardonnay from the 2016 vintage, and a dosage of 6 grams per liter. A complete, well-integrated, medium-bodied sparkling wine with a balance of fruit and savory notes, it offers flecks of oak spice and pastry crust. Textured and creamy in style, it has a lingering brightness on the finish and should age well over the next 10-15 years. (VB)

40 years after first planting vineyards in Northern California's Anderson Valley, famed Champagne house Louis Roederer has just achieved a remarkable feat, being awarded the first 100-point score for a US sparkling wine from Wine Enthusiast! Roederer Estate's prestigious "L'Ermitage" bottling is the tête de cuvée from their US estate. The equivalent bottling on the French, Louis Roederer side of the business, is Cristal. Winemaker Arnaud Weyrich has been working with Roederer since 1993. He has held several roles with the company both in Champagne and here in Anderson Valley. After a stint at Champagne Louis Roederer in Reims, as the Chief Technical Officer, Arnaud took an opportunity in 2002 to move with his family to run operations in California and has been doing so ever since. When selecting fruit for L'Ermitage, Arnaud chooses only his favorite parcels from dozens of blocks, across seven different vineyards throughout the Anderson Valley. Only the very best wines are selected. 5% of the base wine is barrel fermented, then the wine ages for over 5 years on the lees before being disgorged. The 2019 is a suave and sophisticated wine with stunning purity of fruit, crystalline elegance, a fine, silky bead on the palate with so much freshness and vibrancy. A blend of 52% Chardonnay and 48% Pinot Noir, with 5% reserve wine added to the assemblage. The dosage is just 6g/L, the lowest ever for L'Ermitage because the wine has all the texture and depth it needs without a heavy dosage. It's a stunning wine that will continue to grow and shine for 5-10 years at least.

Notes

Virginia Boone's notes on the producer for jebdunnuck.com: "Champagne Louis Roederer started planting grapes in the Anderson Valley in 1982, when California sparkling wine wasn’t yet a thing. Over time, this Philo-based outpost and production facility known as Roederer Estate has become entirely estate-grown, now farming 600 acres of organically and biodynamically farmed vines in the area, which estate winemaker Arnaud Weyrich says has higher acidity on average than Champagne. The winery’s signature style is to add oak-aged reserve wines to each year’s cuvée." (02/2025)
