From vines planted to 10 x 4 spacing in 2000, and biodynamically farmed, the 2022 Tempranillo Impulsivo makes one think of Ribera Del Duero in its intensity and richness of balsamic black berry and passionfruit. More new oak is applied (40% new French) for 18 months, which accentuates the inherent tension of the wine’s texture and length. The drinking window is long, now through 2042.

Int'l Wine Review

Review Date: 02/2025
The 2022 Cayuse Impulsivo Tempranillo is a commanding and intricately layered wine, sourced from the En Chamberlin Vineyard. Aged for 18 months in 40% new French oak, it exudes a deeply savory and mineral-driven aromatic profile—black truffle, smoked cedar, and dried oregano meld with blackberry preserves, cured black-peppered meats, and crushed basalt. On the palate, this Tempranillo is both powerful and finessed, revealing layers of macerated black cherries, balsamic-glazed short ribs, and espresso bean, all wrapped in a framework of vibrant acidity and polished tannins. The underlying stony minerality gives the wine an electric tension, balancing its full-bodied depth with remarkable freshness. Silky yet structured, it finishes with a lingering forest floor richness. Almost 400 cases made. (JY)

Very expressive and savory, this offers wild berries, plum skins, crushed coffee beans, wet forest floor and hints of raw mushrooms. It’s full-bodied, meaty and structured yet layered with delicious fruit, the mineral freshness adding vibrancy and energy. Firm and tightly packed in the finish. From biodynamically grown grapes.

Notes

Cayuse's top-scoring wines are consistent winners across vintages. This is a top-flight Tempranillo made by French-born vintner Christophe Baron. We're loving it already, though it has the density and structure to evolve for decades.
