2015 Nikolaihof "Baumpresse" Riesling Wachau
96
James Suckling
Review Date: 09/2023This texturally complex dry white is like an archetype of Wachau dry riesling and gives you a good idea how top wines of a century ago would have tasted. Beautiful ripe-peach aroma and a terrific balance of ripeness, fine tannins and silky acidity. Very long, impeccably balanced finish. The grapes were pressed using a 350-year-old press. Matured in large neutral oak, then bottled in 2020. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink or hold.

The 2015 Riesling Baumpresse was pressed in the historic press operated by a single oak beam. It was bottled in 2020 and released in spring 2023. Waxiness hits the nose first, followed by dried lemon peel and zest. The palate is super-smooth, with evolution that presents an intense waxiness, almost an oiliness, propelled by lemony intensity. Glints of ripe apricot shimmer, but the palate returns to its golden mean of dried lemon peel. The contrast between rich flavor and slender palate is mind-boggling. This is earthy yet elegant, memorable and intense in its flavor, yet quiet in its delivery. The Baumpresse is gorgeous and long, closing with hints of waxy citrus. (Bone-dry)(AK)

Email CaryThis wine is wild - in the best way. Bubblegum notes hit right up front, playful and unexpected, then it settles into this gorgeous layer of honeysuckle and soft florals. The texture is seamless, carrying all that character with ease. It has this almost meditative quality, like every sip slows things down and makes you pay attention. With a decade of age, it's showing incredible grace and depth. Complex, quirky, and totally captivating - just an amazing bottle of wine.

Email ScottThis classically styled Riesling has become my new favorite. There are scents and flavors of yellow peaches, apricot, honey and lemon cream. Classic oiliness on the palate that coats the tongue without shutting down any of the fantastic flavors. Orange marmalade on the very long and lingering finish. Just wonderful!

Email AaronThis is already starting to do the thing. We all love it when a wine does the thing. What's the thing? Oh, right. It's when a wine is just approaching this perfect drinking window in which it's giving you so much more than you thought you deserved. The nose is integrating itself perfectly where everything is stepping forward at once, it's not petrol then honey then fruit, it's this beautiful mélange of highly expressive slightly honeyed fruit and petrol at once, with little touches of nuttiness. The palate is fairly deep and rich, really long finish with a touch of sultanas and just a lot of really ripe and pretty stone fruit, it's hard to express in just letters and potentially numbers how enjoyable this is at every sniff and sip. This is just such a great example of a wine that's already been aged to greatness, and you get to just walk in and buy it. Outstanding.
