Review Date: 12/2023The 2021 Pinot Noir Doc's Ranch Swan & Calera Selection comes from Calera and Swan clone vines planted in marine sedimentary soil at 1,000 to 1,100 feet in altitude. Made with 50% whole clusters, it opens with pure tones of cinnamon, red cherry and pomegranate; and with time in the glass, it reveals nuances of Earl Grey tea leaves, tangerine, aniseed and rosewater. The light-bodied palate has a weightless feel with its finely chalky tannins and shimmery acidity, yet it offers highly concentrated, nuanced flavors and has a long, expressive finish. (EB)

The original block at Doc's is comprised of Swann clone planted in the mid-90s, and then Calera was planted in 2000. This is a blend of half-old vine and half-younger vine bottling. White pepper, red berries, mint, and pine bough alight from the glass. This is followed by a silky palate of red and blue fruits that is lifted by saline notes of seaspray. Fresh mint mingles with white pepper on the finish of this wine. (CP)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Doc's Ranch Vineyard Swan & Calera Selection is beguiling. Sweet red cherry, mint, star anise, crushed flowers, cedar and autumn leaves all grace this lifted, ethereal Pinot. A wine of understatement and class, the 2021 needs time to come into its own. It is undeniably gorgeous, though, and bursting with character. (AG)
