2023 Domaine Dominique & Janine Crochet "Le Chêne Marchand" Sancerre

The Crochets farm some of the finest vineyards around the village of Bué. La Chêne Marchand is a blend of limestone (the famed Caillottes) and clay, but the Crochets’ parcel includes a unique subset of softer chalk known as Griottes. This distinctive terroir yields wines of remarkable finesse and elegance. A touch of large-format oak aging (600L demi-muids) adds texture and depth, resulting in one of the most refined yet sumptuous Sancerres on our shelves. Expect notes of peach, lemon rind, and a pristine, chalky minerality on the nose. Always among the most sought-after wines from Crochet, it stands shoulder to shoulder with top producers like Pinard and Jolivet—yet remains a far greater value.

Notes

From one of the most hallowed vineyards in Sancerre, and made by the scion of one of the pre-eminent families in Sancerre, Dominique Crochet's Les Chêne Marechand Sancerre is a gorgeously expressive wine. This vineyard near the village of Bué annually produces some of the most complex and collectible Sauvignon Blanc on the planet. It’s got all the telltale signs of a great Sauvignon Blanc, prominent lime zest, gooseberry and honey dew notes, but it’s also got weight. The grapes are from an old vineyard plot, dubbed "Le Chêne Marchand." It faces south where the grapes ripen effortlessly to produce a wine that’s bolder and richer. Another source for the body in this wine is the use of large neutral oak barrels during the aging process. I recommend a chicken or fish pairing that’s got a rich sauce.
