Fantastic anise and fennel complexity for a wine that is still light- to medium-bodied. Terrific drive and raciness on the compact and structured palate. Fantastic length. Beautiful balance in the long, complete finish. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

In a place renowned for steep vineyards, Erdener Treppchen, or little stairs in one that had stairs cut into the hillside ages ago. It's an upright Kabinett bottling from 60-year-old vines that embraces the classic, ‘just ripe’ style with such graceful minerality and glinting spice—the aromatics of chipped slate, tart lemon zest and beguiling spice from the red slate soils. The palate is light and lithe, as fresh and zest citrus pulp, lemon bee balm and sweet candied ginger are framed by a terrific stony minerality.(CP)

Sweet and tangy, this delivers refreshing pleasure, offering a lush core of apple and meadow flowers. Crystalline purity dominates. The finish is precise and shows vibrant firmness, with a waft of smoke. Drink now. 2,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.

Notes

93pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 17 24. The 2023er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett was made from fruit picked at 77° Oechsle and was fermented down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (41 g/l). It offers a beautiful nose made of white flowers and herbs. The wine is gorgeously playful and nicely fresh on the palate, where a good touch of zest adds juiciness to the finish. This is a truly gorgeous and hugely classic expression Kabinett in the making! 2033-2053." 91pts Fallstaff Magazine: "Delicate aroma of ripe, bright fruit, Williams pear, peach, red apple, followed by kumquats and mint, a hint of crushed rock. Fresh acidity on the palate, light fruits and flowers dominate, pear, springy, subtle, very gluggable."(11/2024)
