Vibrant and linear, with a firm line of tannins and terrific length on the iron-tinged finish. Ends with fruit, mineral and spice notes, showing solid grip. The 2019 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigneto San Marcellino is a dark, brooding wine. Black cherry, leather, smoke, incense and tobacco add to an impression of gravitas and pure power. This is an especially somber, virile edition of the San Marcellino. Give it a few years to soften. (AG)

Impenetrable dark ruby. Supertuscan but more in the mould of Le Pergole Torte. At first, quite oaky and then opens up to cherry, raspberry and garden herbs. The classic iron note of Sangiovese. Gorgeous, supple red and dark fruit spiced with oak. Suave and long but a little more open-knit and ready than the stunning 2016 was. (WS)
