The 2022 Cornas Harmonie is terrific and exhibits a classic, elegant, beautifully balanced Cornas profile. Red, blue, and black fruits, bouquet garni, and violet notes give way to a medium-bodied, silky, beautifully balanced wine with ripe tannins and a good finish. Fermented with 100% whole clusters and aged 12 months in larger barrels, drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years or so.

Very meaty and savory, but also rippling with wild blackberry fruit, this well-structured, medium-bodied Cornas should delight fans of this appellation. Very good balance at the long finish. A pure syrah that was matured for a full year in oak casks. (SP)

Thyme and bay leaf over blackberry and raspberry fruit. Good concentration, with bright, firm acidity and grippy tannins that aren't as raw as many other 2022s. Medium length. Quite old-school, almost feels like it's from a cool vintage, rather than a hot one. (MW)

The 2022 Cornas Harmonie commences with a classic aromatic profile, bundling black cherry, graphite, violet and leafy touches. Medium- to full-bodied, round and juicy, the 2022 checks out with substantial freshness on the spicy finish. (NG)

Gaining access to the Cornas releases from Domaine Guy Farge was one of my goals when I first met Guy many years ago. They farm smaller parcels in two areas and when I visited them, his son Thomas, along with Guy took me out to show them to me. The vineyards were love at first sight. The hillsides for the Reynard parcel were so treacherous, they nearly induced vertigo. I immediately appreciated what Guy and Thomas had set out to do. Now Guy has retired and the bulk of the work falls to Thomas, who has taken a more adventurous streak. He moved all the vineyards to organic, and uses minimal inputs in his winemaking. The new Harmonie is all whole cluster from the the Sauman and Reynard hillsides. Everything is fermented with native yeasts and the wine spends about a year in used demi-muid (larger oak barrels). Dark berry fruit with a richer profile, there are elements of cocoa powder, oolong tea and new saddle leather. This is incredible purity for a young Cornas, and given an hour or more in the decanter, it opens beautifully to show you even more layers.

Notes

Guy Farge took over the management of his family estate in 1980. Originally he sold his fruit to the Cave de Tain (where he worked) and then to Delas. In 2007, he began producing wines under his own label. Each year, the wines have grown and evolved as has Guy's winemaking prowess. Now working with his son Thomas, each bottling represents some of the best we have seen from his primarily granitic terroirs. The Cornas is a particularly special site composed primarily of the Reynard lieu-dit and a small portion of Sauman. It is aged in 400L primarily used barrels for about 12 months. The results, as with all of Guy's wines, are pure balanced expressions of their terroir.
