A savoury, mouthwatering aromatic expression of bay leaves and juniper berries ground into smoked sausage. Medium weight, this is an appetising style with perfectly balanced acidity and tannins that really take root on your tongue. Long, textural, dry finish. Excellent. From 100-year-old vines with no destemming. (MW)

This St-Joseph has been built for the medium and long term. At first this is pretty closed with an intense graphite character, but with a bit of aeration deep damson plum and wild blackberry fruit emerges, also pepper and raw meat notes. Densely structured, but still relatively sleek this has so much mineral freshness at the long, firm finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. (SP)

The 2020 Saint Joseph Passion De Terrasses is similarly hued and has that wild, classic style of the domaine, yet it's more fruit-driven and pure than the Côte du Pouly. Blackberries, crushed stone, peppery herbs, and some floral notes all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a great mid-palate, and displays the purity and freshness that's the hallmark of the vintage.

From the oldest plots at the domaine, the "Passion" is like a baby Jamet. An explosive perfume of blackcurrant, cherries, bay and juniper, erupt from the glass. The long savory finish gives way to stylish tannins. This has tremendous complexity and is only just beginning to show its true potential.

Notes

Guy Farge took over the management of his family estate in 1980. Originally he sold his fruit to the Cave de Tain (where he worked) and then to Delas. In 2007, he began producing wines under his own label. Each year, the wines have grown and evolved as has Guy's winemaking prowess. He's now working with his son Thomas, and each bottling represents some of the best we have seen from his primarily granitic terroirs. The "Passion de Terrasse" is his oldest vines from sites in Aubert, La Roue and around the winery in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. It is 100% Syrah fermented whole-cluster and aged in 400L barrels for about 12 months with a small portion of new wood. The results, as with all of Guy's wines, are pure, balanced expressions of his terroir.
