Quietly fragrant, with bright, zesty berry fruits. This is powerful, with denim-like tannins and firm acidity. There’s a good sense of purity, even though it’s very concentrated. It needs time, and has all it needs to wait until it blossoms. From 60-year-old vines between the villages of St-Jean-de-Muzols and Vion. In conversion to organic. (MW)

Red and black fruits, leather, dried flowers, and graphite all emerge from the 2022 Saint Joseph Terroir De Granit, a medium to full-bodied, balanced, layered, and elegant Saint Joseph. It shows the riper fruit of the vintage yet stays balanced, with solid structure. It is best enjoyed over the coming 7-8 years, if not a solid decade or more.

The Terroir de Granit is the wine that put Domaine Guy Farge on the map. Coming from a line of growers in the region, Farge worked at the Cave de Tain selling his fruit there as well as Delas during his career. When Guy retired his son Thomas took over about year or two after we started working with the family. It has been exciting to watch Thomas' progress as a winemaker. Shifting to organics and using minimal inputs in the cellar - think large oak vessels, concrete tanks and gravity for the most part, he has progressed into one of the keenest young vignerons in St-Joseph. This "Terroir" has beautiful black fruit notes with savory spices and classic meaty tones. I recently tried this against the 2017 and it was amazing to see just how well the wines evolve with a few years of bottle age on them. The 2022 is generous - its an excellent vintage - and I know the promise of a little extra age will allow this wine to evolve into something even more tremendous.

Notes

Guy Farge took over the management of his family estate in 1980. Originally selling his fruit to the Cave de Tain (where he worked) and then to Delas, in 2007 he began producing wines under his own label. Each year, the wines have grown and evolved as has Guy's winemaking prowess. Now working with his son Thomas, each bottling represents some of the best we have seen from his primarily granitic terroirs. The "Terroir de Granit" is primarily from sites in Aubert, La Roue and around the winery in Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. It is aged in used 400L barrels for about 12 months and is about 60-70% destemmed depending on the vintage. The results, as with all of Guy's wines, are pure balanced expressions of his terroir.
