The 2020 VIBN4 Viñas Viejas is 100% Tempranillo sourced from Villabuena in Rioja Alavesa. This garnet-red wine with a purplish sheen aged in concrete and foudres. It presents nuanced aromas of blackberry and blueberry, accompanied by hints of violets and balsamic notes. On the palate, it is dry, intense and juicy, with an infusion-like mouthfeel supported by compact, fine-grained tannins. This expressive red lingers on the palate with its delineated flavors. Interestingly, its name subtly references the place without explicitly stating it, adhering to the labeling regulations in Rioja. (JH)

Complex nose with a nice touch of balsamic to the dark fruit, peppery spices and lavender. Juicy and firm, with a full body and a long, broad finish full of fruit. The tannins are a bit grainier and more present in the 2020 than they are in the 2021, but they are still quite fine and silky. The quality of fruit is high. Drink or hold.

Bideona use grapes from eight different parcels in Villabuena, some of them more than a century old, to produce this cuvée of Tempranillo and other, field-blended varieties. Sweet and juicy, with notes of rose petal, Turkish Delight and raspberry coulis, 20% new wood and a fresh, tangy, balanced finish. 2023-26

Email MariahIf you are looking for Tempranillo less on the fruity side and more dominated by savory herbaceous notes, you have to give this a try. This is an unmistakably well-made wine; several layers of earthen charm have a complexity and depth that can only be achieved by a winemaker that really knows what they are doing. The fruit provides a window into the soul of the vineyard itself, as if taking you on a journey through the soil, roots, and vine.

Email AaronYou might call me a little crazy, but this Rioja has one of the most unique noses I've smelled recently. On top of the expected red and black brambley fruits, there's a distinctive grapefruit zest that somehow keeps worming its way to the top of the pecking order. It's engaging more than it is distracting, and it kept me going back to smell this over and over until I could figure out what it was. The palate is rich, all of the Bideona wines that I've tasted today have definitely been bigger and bolder wines, but a through-line has been really outstanding balance between the bigger palate is a nice racy acidity that keeps things copacetic.
