James Suckling

A firm yet juicy red with aromas and flavors of plums, orange peel, dried roses and sandalwood. It’s full-bodied and lightly toasty with sweet-walnut character coming through. Drink or hold.

Vinous

The 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Bruciagna is quite potent and brooding at the outset. Black cherry, licorice, gravel, incense, tobacco, dried herbs and cedar add to an impression of gravitas, substance and power. It would be great to see if more finesse is possible here. Even so, this is a solid Gran Selezione. Aging was 70% in small French oak barrels and 30% in cask. I find the oak imprint a bit overpowering, at least in this vintage, but it works within the style of the wine.

Notes

Castello La Leccia's "Bruciagna" Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a distinguished expression of Sangiovese from the esteemed Bruciagna vineyard, situated at an elevation of 500 meters with south to southwest exposure. The 20-year-old vines thrive in soils rich in alberese and galestro, contributing to the wine's unique character. The winemaking process begins with manual harvesting in September and October, ensuring only the finest grapes are selected. After destemming and gentle crushing, the berries undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled steel tanks, followed by a pre-fermentative cryomaceration for 24 hours. The wine is then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels and barriques, allowing it to develop complexity and depth.
