The 2020 Château Le Thil is shockingly good and reminds me of a great Pomerol with its ripe black cherry and blueberry fruit as well as notes of violets, damp earth, and chocolate nuances. Medium to full-bodied and concentrated, with notable purity and freshness, this is a thrilling Pessac to enjoy over the coming 15 years or so.

Fine tannins with blackberries, currants and hints of hazelnut. It’s medium-bodied and linear with firmness and length. Needs three or four years to soften.

From clay-limestone slopes with southern exposure, unsual for the appellation, more typical of St Emilion than Pessac Leognan. It gives a punch of spicy vibrant damson and red cherry fruit on the opening, then in come supple, firm and powerful tannins. Plenty of fresh acidities, this is excellent quality, with life and crunch, and good persistency on the close of play.

The 2020 Le Thil is a gorgeous, enticing Merlot-based Pessac-Léognan from team at Smith Haut-Lafitte. Wild cherry, tobacco, cedar, mint and white pepper lend notable freshness to this very attractive, mid-weight 2020. Bright acids and lifted floral accents perk up the finish. There is a bit of nervousness in the tannin, but there always is here. (AG)

Crafted by the team at Smith Haut Lafitte, Le Thil is their property that's right down the road in Pessac and has always been on our radar for an over-delivering gem. That said, this 2020 (like many 2020s from Pessac) is on another level. The aromas have that inky black fruit and gravel, but the mouthwatering palate full of ripe blackberry, cassis, and fine, chalky tannin has so much character and complexity. A long, resonating finish has me reaching quickly for another taste. This is really fine Pessac for a remarkable price, and a must-try gem that clearly shows the next-level detail and refinement that we've all come to expect from the Cathiard wines.
