Cherry and hibiscus aromas with hints of tar and dried flowers such as roses. Full-bodied and layered, with lots of juicy and rich fruit showing the warmth of the vintage, yet it’s framed with creamy and chewy tannins that give it form and intensity. A very serious and structured 2020.

Enticing scents of woodland berry, camphor and exotic brown spice mingle with a whiff of dog rose on the lovely 2020 Aleste from Sandrone. Structured and loaded with finesse, the savory palate features ripe red cherry, blood orange, star anise and a mineral note recalling rusty nail. It’s firm but elegant, with fine-grained tannins while fresh acidity keeps it impeccably balanced.

The Luciano Sandrone 2020 Barolo Aleste (with 10,000 bottles released) is layered with sweet earth and drunken cherry. It shows seamless integration and a crescendo of intensity that starts with ripe fruit and dovetails into oak elements, licorice, spice and balanced acidity. This wine is very beautiful in terms of mouthfeel, with length and complexity. Aleste is made with fruit from Cannubi Boschis in the village of Barolo. This is the full monty. (ML)

The 2020 Barolo Aleste is a classy, elegant wine that will drink well right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and dark spice resonate beautifully. Soft and succulent, with silky tannins, the 2020 Aleste is a total charmer. (AG)

Luciano Sandrone was a key figure of the “Barolo Boys,” the progressive group of winemakers that in the 80s and 90s where trying to modernize Barolo introducing strategies like shorter macerations and French oak. Trying to find a compromise between tannic structure and elegance. While some of his counterpart in this group decided for a more “modern” approach, Sandrone was to me that one the was able to find the middle ground between traditions and modern approachability. Originally called Cannubi Boschis, "Aleste" represents the legacy of one in every of Barolo’s maximum celebrated crus, sourced from the heart of the ancient vineyard that made Sandrone famous. Aged for 24 months in 500L French Tonneaux, followed via extended bottle aging, Sandrone’s is able to make a wine that is beautiful now but can also age gracefully for long time. I always loved this dual function about this producer. A true classic and historic wine, perfect for those that are still not to experience with Barolos.

Notes

Luciano Sandrone "Aleste" Barolo 2020 is a distinguished single-vineyard Barolo from one of Piedmont's most acclaimed winemakers, Luciano Sandrone. Formerly known as "Cannubi Boschis," the wine was renamed "Aleste" in honor of Sandrone's grandchildren, Alessia and Stefano, and represents a benchmark expression of Nebbiolo from this legendary site. The 2020 vintage showcases Sandrone's dedication to traditional winemaking paired with a modern finesse that highlights the exceptional terroir of Cannubi Boschis. On the nose, "Aleste" Barolo 2020 offers an intricate bouquet of red cherries, wild strawberries, and dark plums, alongside floral notes of roses and violets. Hints of licorice, tobacco, and a touch of sweet spice add depth to the aromatic profile. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and well-structured, with finely grained tannins and vibrant acidity that carry flavors of ripe red fruit, earthy undertones, and a touch of mineral complexity. The finish is long and elegant, showcasing both power and finesse.
