With a glimmering ruby-blue core with a light pink rim, the tantalizing 2022 Carson Phillips Vineyard Pinot Noir from Hundred Suns rested in French oak barrels for 11 months. Broad and expansive across the palate, it boasts notes of Bing cherries, crushed ripe red raspberries, white tea, freshly cut roses, and subtle spice notes of grated cardamon pods. I kept coming back to this wine over the course of an hour, and it kept getting better and better with time. Tannins are a bit grippy but with a few years of bottle age, it’s going to be perfect. A small production of 154 cases was crafted. Highly recommended and editor’s choice.

Decanter

This Pinot Noir comes from Carson Phillips Vineyard in the northwest end of the Dundee Hills, just above Bronson Creek. Organically farmed, it was fermented in two lots, one completely destemmed and the other with partial whole cluster. Briny aromatics mix with sweet berries and blood oranges. There is a fullness to this wine, a melange of ripe red berries, tart citrus and tomato leaf herbaceous character close around a core of earth-driven minerals and a precise, focused fruit finish.

James Suckling

Layers of bright red fruit, fresh plums and sweet spices on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied and structured, with firmly integrated tannins giving a long, drying finish. Rose petals, fresh raspberries, forest floor and dried herbs linger. A very well-constructed pinot noir. Drink or hold.

Review Date: 05/2024
The 2022 Pinot Noir Carson Phillips Vineyard is understated and coy, whispering up from the glass with only hints of cherry cola and spice. This displays round and pliant textures along with juicy acidity that propels its ripe wild berry fruits across the palate. The 2022 leaves a staining of primary concentration, finishing with dramatic length, a coating of fine-grained tannins and a glorious perfume. (EG)
