Reviewed July 2019The 2010 Bien Nacido Chardonnay from Au Bon Climat is a powerhouse of both opulence and verve. On the nose, green apples and candied pineapples mix with marshmallows and creme brûlée. The palate is oily and voluptuous, with flavours of salted caramel, candied ginger and roasted hazelnuts. The combination of sweet, almost hedonistic concentration and lively zing is fantastic. That this wine spent 18 months in 100% new French oak is a testament to the beauty and power of proper vineyard work and well-treated old vines. (ML)

Light yellow-gold. A complex bouquet evokes poached pear, melon, anise and vanilla, with smoke and nutmeg topnotes. Juicy and precise on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering sappy citrus and orchard fruit flavors and a touch of candied fig. Dusty minerals add cut to the finish, which features sweet vanilla bean and candied ginger qualities. I really like this chardonnay;s blend of richness and vivacity. This bottling has a stellar track record for aging, if you're one of the half dozen people out there who actually cellars their California chardonnay. (JR)
