2019 Charles Baur Brand Riesling Grand Cru Alsace
94
Vinous
Review Date: 04/2023The 2019 Riesling Brand Grand Cru is from a lieu-dit called Schnackelsburg on sand and granite soils. It has more topsoil, which avoids water stress. Lifted notions of dried lemon peel with an edge of chamomile define the nose with a subtle stoniness. The palate is stony, slightly salty and underscored by dried lemon peel brightness with much concentration and serene acidity. The finish almost tastes like wet rock and has a lovely apple flesh flavor. (Dry)(AK)

94pts Ian d'Agata, Terroir Sense: "Deep straw yellow with some green. Big and spicy on the nose, offering aromas of ripe apple, pear, apricot, stone and balsamic herbs. Then very good laser-like freshness, with spicy cut lifting the ripe orchard fruit flavours but the long finish is risingly broad and ample in the Brand sort of way. These 47 years old vines are in the Shinkenberg/Schneckelsbourg, a very atypical part of the Brand (characterized by limestone below and sand and only very little granite above). Very good, but it is a very different expression of Brand in which the combination of sand and a little granite allows for a wine that is at once vertical, broad and spicy-saline. Drinking window: 2024-2035." (10/2023)
