There are so many great producers in Alsace making fantastic Grand Cru Riesling: Trimbach, Boxler, Weinbach and Zind Humbrecht to name a few but none of them are able to offer a Grand Cru Riesling at this price. Most are going to be 2-4 times the price of the Charles Baur Brand Riesling Grand Cru. This is a classic wine form the very first sniff, notes of almond and petrol with hints of oxidation jump from the glass while the palate is alive with citrus, stone and mineral notes. Zesty and bright with great complexity and a multi-layered finish this is a tremendous value.

The 2019 Charles Baur Riesling Grand Cru Brand is a striking expression of Alsace terroir—focused, vibrant, and quietly confident. It opens with lifted aromas of lime blossom, passion fruit, and flinty minerality, along with a subtle touch of petrol that hints at early development. On the palate, it’s zesty and mouthwatering, layered with citrus peel, juicy stone fruit, and crushed rock. A savory thread runs beneath the fruit, bringing depth and character without overpowering. As it opens in the glass, more floral and herbal notes emerge, giving the wine even more nuance. It finishes long and clean, with a lasting impression of wet stone, lemon oil, and alpine herbs. Enthralling nose with a long line of petrol running through the whole nose, wrapped around gorgeous aromatic fruits. There's a lot of fleshy white peach, white plum, and a little salty lemon. The palate has gorgeous depth without fleshing out too wide, feeling very much like quickly walking down a curved staircase. There's a great line of acidity running through the whole palate and just a touch of nuttiness on the finish. There are times where it's more clear than others that you're tasting the the quality of the grapes and the age of the vineyard almost more than the winemaking, and this is one of those for me. Really delicious, and a crazy good wine for the price.
