2022 Charles Baur Eichberg Riesling Grand Cru Alsace
94
James Suckling
Review Date: 02/2024The best thing about this remarkable dry Alsace riesling is the way the considerable power is underplayed and only shows its hand right at the finish. It also remains bright and cool in spite of the very warm vintage, with delicate Mirabelle plum and fresh quince aromas. As attractive as it is now, this has excellent potential and should gain with more bottle age. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

92pts Ian d'Agata, Terroir Sense: "Medium dark straw yellow. Relatively open for such a young wine, with aromas and flavours of ripe yellow fruit, chamomile and star anise. Tastes broad, tactile and fresh with good sweetness of ripe fruit. From two lieux-dits, the Oberkrot high in limestone content and the Niedereich which has limestone in its soil but also sandstone: the wine seems more dominated by the former than the latter (he got a hold of it in 2018). The average age of the vines of these two plots is 49 years of age. Drinking window: 2024-2032." (10/2023)
