Decanter

Depth, structure and complexity are the hallmarks of Nebbiolo, and this wine certainly delivers but also offers a juicy helping of fresh berry fruits. It is blended from 14 different sites throughout the Barbaresco DOCG with an average of 40 years of vine age. Barbaresco is the wine that launched the Gaja legacy in 1859. Aromatics of spiced orange peel, an assertive bouquet of dried purple florals and a touch of dried mint. The palate balances the savoury character of baking chocolate and fennel seed with an abundance of ripe red berry fruits—notes of strawberry and balsamic, raspberries and fresh mint and dried tobacco. There is ample structure, but a stylistic transition in more recent vintages of Barbaresco makes this wine immediately drinkable.

James Suckling

So many aromas of fresh rose petals as well as hibiscus tea. Medium-bodied with crunchy and flowery character with sliced strawberries and a bright finish. So appealing with lovely structure. Chewy at the end. Drinkable but better in three or four years.

Vinous

The 2020 Barbaresco is a very young wine. In most years, the Gaja Barbaresco is quite showy, but the 2020 clearly needs time. There's terrific fruit intensity, but the aromatics aren't quite expressive. These days the Gaja wines have less oak imprint, which pushes the fruit forward, but also yields a wine that is a bit more austere in the early going.

Wine Enthusiast

Blended across 14 vineyards, this wine shows the class, beauty and vitality of the noble Nebbiolo grown in the soils of Barbaresco. The wine opens with aromas of ripe cherries, warmed strawberries in sweet spices, fresh herbs and mixed flowers. The palate is lifted and vibrant with a verve that electrifies the palate as flavors of boysenberry, dried blood orange and black tea saunter about alongside well-intergrated tannins, making this wine drinkable now but ready for the cellar. Notes

Gaja Barbaresco is an iconic expression of Nebbiolo from one of Italy's most legendary producers. Crafted from grapes sourced from several of Gaja's top vineyards around the village of Barbaresco, this wine exemplifies the elegance, complexity, and finesse that define the Barbaresco appellation. Angelo Gaja, often credited with elevating Barbaresco to the level of its more famous neighbor Barolo, brings a meticulous approach to winemaking that emphasizes purity, balance, and the true character of Nebbiolo. On the nose, Gaja Barbaresco reveals a captivating bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, and dark plums, interwoven with floral notes of roses and violets. Subtle hints of licorice, tobacco, and earthy undertones add depth, while a touch of spice and mint completes the aromatic profile. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with silky tannins and vibrant acidity that support flavors of ripe red fruit, herbs, and a delicate minerality. The finish is long, refined, and complex, showcasing the wine’s impeccable structure and aging potential.
