The 2020 Darmagi is one of the most refined editions of this wine I can remember tasting. Silky, aromatic and light on its feet, the 2020 is all class, all elegance. The 2020 will need time to develop its aromatic and flavor complexity, but the balance is there. I have never been the biggest fan of the Gaja Cabernet Sauvignon. This is an exceptional wine by any measure. Sadly, the vineyard faces some challenges at this point in time. (AG)

The 2020 Darmagi is lifted with rocky earth, graphite, cassis, violets, and wild herbs. Medium to full-bodied but restrained, it offers fine tannins, fresh acidity, and notes of black raspberry, red plum, and dusty earth. It is persistent and has wonderful length and gracefulness. (AF)

Ironically named Darmagi – meaning ‘what a pity’ in the Piedmontese dialect – stemming from Giovanni Gaja's reported lament at discovering his son, Angelo had replaced Nebbiolo vines with Cabernet Sauvignon. This single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon planted in 1978 on calcareous soils exemplifies the Langhe expression of the variety. Savoury aromas immediately entice with tomato leaf, shrubby herbs, blackcurrant and plush black cherry. Layer upon layer of fleshy dark fruits unfold, alongside new Italian leather, nutmeg spice and tobacco. Bearing Gaja's signature precision, this is superbly structured with remarkable vibrancy and a mineral-driven finish. 24 months of oak ageing (12 months in barrique, 12 months in large oak). (IS)

Blackberry and hints of cassis burst from the glass, complemented by sweet oak and vanilla spices. The lush, round palate is filled with dark fruit, supported by fine, well-mannered tannins that lead to a mixed berry coulis that intertwines with savory herbs on the finish, with a subtle touch of tobacco. Notes

Gaja "Darmagi" Langhe Rosso is an iconic wine from the Gaja estate, crafted entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon. The name "Darmagi," which means "what a pity" in the Piedmontese dialect, reflects the reaction of Angelo Gaja's father when he first planted Cabernet Sauvignon in a region traditionally known for Nebbiolo. Despite the initial skepticism, "Darmagi" has become a benchmark for high-quality Cabernet in Italy, showcasing how international varieties can thrive in the Langhe’s unique terroir. On the nose, "Darmagi" reveals a complex bouquet of blackcurrants, blackberries, and ripe plums, intertwined with notes of mint, eucalyptus, and subtle hints of cedar and tobacco. The careful use of oak aging adds layers of vanilla, spice, and a touch of smokiness. On the palate, it is full-bodied and powerful, with firm, polished tannins and balanced acidity. Flavors of dark fruit, chocolate, and herbs unfold, leading to a long, smooth, and elegant finish with a refined, mineral edge.
