2023 Domaine d'Abrigeon "Coquelicot" Grenache Vin de France Rouge
The Coquelicot is a sumptuous Grenache. It is teeming with red fruit flavors of strawberries and raspberries. The lovely florals emerge with notes of hibiscus and rose. The palate is anchored by the lovely red fruits with tobacco and spice notes. The tannins are sweet and defined and the acid keep everything focused. When I tasted the wines Nadia and Julien d’Abrigeon two years ago, I was immediately entranced. The 2023 is proof of concept. This winemaking duo are one of the most exciting young producers I have encountered in my decade plus traveling the Rhone. This is a wine for those who want to be in the "know!"

Notes
The village of Buisson was once a lesser desired site in the Southern Rhone. Sitting on the northern slope of the same hill where the south facing Rasteau and Cairanne lie, this was the cooler side where fruit didn't always achieve maximum ripeness. Nadia and Julien d’Abrigeon saw potential though and were looking for affordable land in the south. They dreamed of creating a biodynamic estate and this cooler site and 80+ year old established vines checked the right boxes for them. Julien had started his journey as a geologist but wanted to work closer to nature. He shifted to the wine industry working in Bordeaux, New Zealand and even Switzerland. He most recently was working for Jean-Louis Chave in Tain l'Hermitage until he and Nadia began on this project. At the beginning they were selling most of their fruit to Jean-Louis for his "Mon Coeur" Cotes du Rhone but in 2021 they produced their first wine. They now farm 8 hectares, all certified organic and are working on their biodynamic certification. The Cocquelicot is Grenache, all from the cooler slopes of Buisson. All fermented and aged in tank, this is bright and pure expression that reflects its namesake flower - the Coquelicot (poppy).
